Sridevi’s comeback film ‘English Vinglish’ which became a global blockbuster in 2012 is still creating headlines. This runaway hit of 2012 has now emerged as the second highest grossing Bollywood film ever in Hong Kong after ’3 Idiots’.
As per latest reports, the Sridevi starrer is still rock solid at the Hong Kong Top 10 Box-Office chart after its release last month. It has so far raked in over US $ 2,00,000 making it the second most successful Hindi film ever in Hong Kong territory. English Vinglish was dubbed in Cantonese and English for the audiences there and was released in 7 screens with 29 daily shows making it the widest release ever for an Indian film. The good news for the film does not end here. With the Bollywood icon Sridevi stunning the Hong Kong audience with her towering performance, this cult-classic is now going to be screened at the prestigious Hong Kong Director’s Club. This is a venue that screens only the most celebrated films from across the world and Hindi films are rarely allowed here. English Vinglish now has the pride of being screened at this elite venue establishing once again that both Sridevi and her comeback masterpiece have had a massive global impact.
The film released last year became both a domestic and international success making Sridevi one of the few female superstars in Bollywood whose heroine-oriented films have become global hits. The success of English Vinglish despite the absence of a top male star also established the enduring star power and box office appeal of this legendary actress who managed to make the most glorious comeback ever in Bollywood. Sridevi went on to receive a standing ovation when English Vinglish premiered at Toronto Film Festival in September and even earned the famous tag of ‘India’s Meryl Streep’ from US media. Besides Toronto, the films also received huge acclaim at Berlin, Marrakech, Slovakia, London and Panama film festivals and made it to the Box Office India list of Top 10 Overseas Blockbusters of 2012.
Hong Kong territory is fast becoming a growing market for Bollywood films and the resounding success of ‘English Vinglish’ is surely going to pave way for many more Hindi releases here.
