Shilpa Shetty & Viaan Kundra on cover Hello! India

One of the fittest B-town moms, Shilpa Shetty Kundra talks to Hello! India this month, on her tiny tot, Viaan Kundra and the changes he has brought about in her life.

Dressed in white, the Kundras sure make a pleasant sight. Don't they?

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

“I was painfully aware that a pregnancy after 35 was going to be a very different experience from what my mum might have known,” says the actress. “And strangely, it was my mum who started nagging me five months after Viaan was born. She said, ‘I got back into shape six months after having you!’ And I reminded her she was just 23 when she had me!" laughs Shilpa.

"One day I had this scary moment when he started crawling at five months, and I wanted to pick him up, but I couldn’t stand up from my kneeling position. And that’s when it struck me, that my muscles weren’t strong anymore, and I had way too much weight on me. Now imagine when you’ve had an image as a fitness icon – pompous as it may sound – and you walk around 83 kilos, the pressure to lose weight is tremendous. You know there have been film song lyrics like Shilpa sa figure Bebo si ada, etc. People were sneering behind my back, challenging me to ever go back to who I was. People can be very, very mean about such things… particularly if you want to head back into the limelight. Just look at the way they were hounding Ash! But c’mon, stars are human too!”

While Viaan was still inside Shilpa, one recalls seeing her projected on the monitors during the launch of the Super Fight League at the Andheri Sports Complex. One asks Shilpa how she could ‘stomach’ a match where wrestlers were beating each other up and blood was literally on the floor! Even people around in the audience were speculating on how the violence might impact the foetus! “I believe if your heart and soul is pure, and you are a positive person, your child will imbibe those qualities,” she muses. “As a wife, I had to be there for my husband, show my full support, and my mother also raised the same question.. but I know differently. I think it takes a lot of talent to go into a cage, and learn 36 different martial art forms. If anything, it would have taught my child how to be brave!” she laughs.

While the couple were initially very protective of Viaan, Shilpa confessed that “sooner or later, people will see him. I just wanted him to reach the one-year mark. Recently he made his debut in an IPL bib I designed for him; I wanted to take him to Jaipur for his first match as everybody wanted to see him.. you know the players, the staff… I brought him out for a night match as it was a pleasant 26 degrees Celsius, and he actually had a good time. He got to see so many people, screaming, excited. It was all fascinating for him.”
